I recently completed the Annapurna Circuit in October 2017. I was both sceptic and excited before starting the journey. Annapurna circuit generally takes anywhere between 14 to 21 days. And we, me and two of colleagues had only 10 days to finish it. This is how my education went along Annapurna -
- We had more than 6 people confirm that they want to do the circuit. Finally three of us made to Nepal. What happened to others? The same that happens to most of the business ideas. Some people had other commitments, some people couldn't make it last minute and some people couldn't do it because of their boss.
- We reached Nepal and realised that we had planned for Annapurna base camp but a quick discussion with my colleagues and we changed the plan to Annapurna circuit. Why? Firstly It is harder to complete Annapurna circuit than base camp (it is at least 1000 meters higher in altitude), secondly with some tweaks to the plan we could complete the circuit in ten days. Business learning, it is of utmost importance to have your thinking aligned with your cofounders, and then pivoting a business becomes both fun and challenging.
- One of the things we did to cut down the time of the trek, we took a cab directly to 3rd pitstop and started trekking there. A great learning as a lot of entrepreneurs don't use the available information and resources in the market. Sometimes learning from and leveraging from someone else's work provides both learning and business advantage.
- Our trek was for 8 days, which comprised trekking, hiking for 5 hours daily and then resting through the remaining day. The learnings from this part of journey was immense, I will write separately about this part.
- When we were reaching higher altitude, we come across a very interesting thing. We met three guys who were fitter, younger and stronger than us, they were resting there both tired and sick. What happened? a. They didn't prepare for the trip properly. b. They tried to finish the trip without acclimatisation. Great takeaway from this incident was it is very important for startup to plan ahead and second startups should get used to there surroundings. A lot of times companies just crumble under their own weight when they try to go big without getting acclimatised.
